JULY E-NEWS

Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities.

- R. David Lankes

I’m not sure there is such a thing as a bad library, but I absolutely believe great libraries build communities – and great communities build libraries. Here in Mecklenburg County, we have both. I’ve been thinking about how important it is in today's world that people from all backgrounds can come together in a welcoming, inclusive, accessible place to share experiences. For our community, that place is our Library. We gather at the Library for entertaining programs like a film series, life-changing resources like those in the Job Help Center, and for community conversations about the critical issues that challenge and too often divide our society.

On June 30, your Library Foundation closed another impactful fiscal year. Together, our community invested over $1.47 million dollars in Library programming, print and digital collections, and a growing endowment for future needs. In this issue, Seth Ervin describes how unrestricted dollars raised by our Foundation helped the Library meet an overwhelming demand for online services.

The Leon Levine Foundation believes in our community, and they've demonstrated that confidence through a $100,000 matching grant that challenges us to grow our donor base for long term sustainability. Our goal is to increase our family of donors by 25% in the next six months, and I know we can do it. I hope you’ll help us show and share the Library love by telling others why you support the Library Foundation and encouraging them to get involved too. You can start by forwarding this newsletter!

As always, thank you for supporting your Library and enjoy the rest of your summer.

morrisonMorrison Update

You’ve likely heard that one of the Library’s busiest branches, Morrison Regional, will be closing for renovations at the end of this month. Plans include major technology improvements, dedicated program and study spaces, an expanded children’s area, a café, a creative makerspace, a teen area, outdoor patio and more. The scale of this renovation is a demonstration of the county’s commitment to the Library and our community, today and into the future, and we look forward to the new and improved Morrison next year.

In the meantime, the Library Foundation gets a bonus! Morrison staff will be deployed to other branches or provide administrative support during the closure, and the Foundation is thrilled to welcome children’s manager Walker Doermann to our team, beginning in mid-August.

TLLFShow the Love. Spread the Word. Meet the Match!

You’ll be seeing this message a lot, and we hope you’ll share it. The Library Foundation is honored to receive a matching grant of $100,000 from The Leon Levine Foundation. The goal of the grant is to grow our base of supporters by emphasizing philanthropy as easy, meaningful, accessible – and a great way to demonstrate Library love.

The grant matches new gifts, lapsed gifts, and the increased portion of raised gifts. And it only applies to qualifying gifts of $5,000 or less, received by December 10, 2016. Please share your #Librarylove and encourage others to participate.

The following is from Seth Ervin, the Library’s Associate Director of Access and Organizational Initiatives:

Thank you for keeping us up and running! As technology continues to evolve, the Library’s budget is stretched as we invest in a growing catalog of online resources. Use of our streaming and downloadable services has increased over 88% this past year and now makes up over 15% of all checkouts.

Hoopla allows users to download or stream content to personal devices. The growth in Hoopla’s popularity last fiscal year exceeded our expectations and budget, and we thought we’d have to limit service. Instead, support from the Foundation’s unrestricted gift fund allowed us to continue streaming with no interruption, and we have taken steps to ensure this service is sustainable going forward. With your generous support, the Library is improving lives and building a stronger community every day.

film seriesHollywood Shoots Itself

Our Library is so much more than books!

If you’re a fan of classic Hollywood films you just don’t find at the multiplex, you’ve probably crossed paths with Main Library Coordinator/Supervisor, Sam Shapiro. A lifelong movie buff, Sam believes films are best seen in a theatre, with other people – so he started a film series at the Library in 1993. Free to the public, films are grouped into themes and always include an educational discussion pre- or post-screening. The current series – Hollywood Shoots Itself – features movies about movies, and runs through February with screenings at Main Library and ImaginOn. See you at the movies!
