June E-Newsletter
We have so much to be grateful for, and this month I'm particularly grateful for the inspiring people I collaborate with and learn from, and for all the individuals and organizations who make it possible.

Thanks to a grant from the Knight Foundation, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has the opportunity to work with MACHINE, a design and innovation firm based in New York. With their support and perspective, the vision for the future of Main Library is coming into clear focus. Watch our Facebook page through July for programs labelled "a Public Commons at Main Library event." This is a series of pop-up events designed to test approaches to community involvement for a new Main Library, and we want your participation and feedback.

Earlier this month, my colleague Karen and I attended the Book Expo of America convention. This annual trip is our unofficial kick-off to Verse & Vino season, and we met with publishers to discuss and vet authors. Invitations are out, and we hope to announce a final author lineup by the end of summer. We've also returned with boxes of pre-releases to share - email me your name, address and favorite genre, and I'll send you a book!

Seth Ervin, the Library's Director of Technology and Innovation, and I just returned from the Next Library conference in Aarhus, Denmark. The Knight Foundation sponsored over 20 library professionals from across the country, and we were honored to represent Charlotte. The purpose of this international gathering is to look ahead and explore the continually evolving nature of public libraries in the 21st century. Our biggest takeaway is the value of design thinking - a process that invites organizations to reimagine practice in response to customer behaviors and needs - to libraries. Dokk1, the conference host and central library in Aarhus, Denmark, is known internationally as a "library of tomorrow." It's an illustration of design thinking in action - driven completely by and for the citizens of Aarhus.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has always been a leader, and we are committed to staying at the forefront of the field. The experiences and exposure we just had in Denmark will inform our thinking as we envision and implement library services for the next generation in our own community.

I hope you are enjoying your summer, and I look forward to sharing more next month.
