"If you change the world around you, you will find yourself changing the world." - Angie Thomas to Community Read 2019 audience
We are in the middle of Community Read 2019, and this week featured author Angie Thomas spoke to a sellout crowd about her powerful, best-selling novel The Hate U Give. The novel is about many things, but at its core it’s about finding your voice.
She talked about finding – and using – her own voice through writing, and about finding empathy and greater understanding through books. Thomas challenged the audience to ask “Do I know what it’s like to be someone who isn’t like me?” and further challenged us to go find out.
That’s what libraries have the power to do – to be a platform for learning about one another, about issues important to our shared community, and about the world. Libraries bring us together around books, ideas, curiosity, and around the common goal of building a stronger community together.
But first, we have to listen to other voices.
Thank you for supporting your Library and sharing your voice,
Jenni Gaisbauer, CFRE Executive Director
