They spend their days answering questions and hearing stories and talking with people from every walk of life. From this they know, intuitively, what our community needs.
And we all need connection. April is National Poetry Month, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is celebrating with programs throughout the system. Here at Main Library, The Poet is In. Every day from 12-1 p.m. – and often much longer – local poets sit at a desk on the first floor of the Library and write for people.
It starts with a conversation. Poet Jah Smalls explains, “I can write from a few words or a note. These are the guts of the story. But the real magic is in the context and the metaphor, and that happens face to face. With that I can write a poem that helps the person look in the mirror and see what others see."
When The Poet is In, you can feel a difference at the Library. People laugh and cry and contemplate. They slow down and share the poetry with one another and with strangers. Words matter, context matters, connection matters and your Library and librarians help bring the parts together. Stop by for a poem.
