MAY E-NEWS

School’s nearly out, and while kids (of all ages!) dream of long, hot, lazy summer days, the Library is gearing up for the opposite.

Summertime at our 20 branches is bustling with activity, and the Library Foundation is proud to be a part of making it happen. For years, the Library’s popular summer reading program has encouraged readers of all ages to make books a part of their vacation and avoid the “summer slide” teachers too often notice in the fall. This year, the Library takes summer reading to new heights, with a re-imagined “Summer Break: Read, Learn, Explore” program. The Library Foundation and corporate sponsor Wendy’s proudly support this new initiative.

My colleague Karen and I just returned from BookExpo America, an annual conference for authors, publishers, libraries and booksellers. We came home with a huge stack of new books we can't wait to read and share with others. We also met several exciting authors we hope to bring to Charlotte for this year's big literary weekend, November 3-5. Stay tuned for author announcements in the coming weeks!

The Foundation’s Friends Council is also busy, coordinating book sales at Library branches and planning the 7th annual Rock & Read 5K in October. Look for details on all of this and more below.

We couldn’t do any of it without you, our supporters. You’re there for us, and we’re here for you…even on the long, hot, lazy days.

We hope to see you at the Library this summer!

Executive Director

Verse & Vino / EpicFest logosLiterary Weekend

Planning is in full swing for this year’s big literary weekend, scheduled for November 3-5, 2016. This community-wide event celebrates lifelong literacy:  At Verse & Vino, guests mingle with bestselling authors for an evening of food, wine, and conversation. Children's and young adult authors will visit up to 20 Charlotte Mecklenburg schools, and thousands of families will convene at ImaginOn for EpicFest, a free festival featuring children’s authors, book signings and activities. New this year, the weekend will also feature an evening event just for teens.

Many thanks to presenting sponsors PNC Bank (Verse & Vino) and Wells Fargo (EpicFest), and all our generous event supporters for making literary weekend possible.

There's something for everyone – we’ll see you there!

The Rock & Read is organized each year by the Friends’ Council, the Library’s all-volunteer, grassroots fundraising and advocacy group. It takes a village to support the Library, and we couldn’t do it without our Friends!
