JUNE E-NEWS

My two favorite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything.

          - Peter Golkin, Arlington Public Library (VA)

I’ve been riding my own bicycle lately, reflecting on the course of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation. As our fiscal year comes to a strong close, I’ve been thinking a lot about where we’ve been and where we’re going next. Thanks to the enthusiasm and support of this community we’re pedaling forward - fast!

We’re moving forward in a virtual new home. Our new website is vibrant, dynamic and responsive – like the Foundation, our Library and our supporters. We’ve been “moving in” over the last few weeks, building pages and organizing content. As we identify and activate hyperlinks, I’m struck by the layers of interconnectedness between the Foundation, the Library, and the community.

I believe that strong, authentic relationships developed along our path have been key to the Foundation’s growth:

  • Partnerships with corporations like PNC Bank, whose leaders demonstrate confidence in our mission by sponsoring programs, events, and initiatives like Get Ready with Words and Verse & Vino. Or the Preston Family and Wells Fargo, whose support makes EpicFest a reality.
  • Other corporate partnerships provide valuable gifts in kind, like WCCB and the Charlotte Observer and Charlotte Magazine, who help spread the message of the Library’s value throughout the community.
  • Renewed engagement with supporters who have returned to the Library after a lapse, often drawn back by relevant, innovative, and critical programs and services that make a real difference for individuals and enrich our community as a whole
  • And deepening relationships with longtime friends and donors, several of whom have incorporated the Library into their legacy planning since the initiation of our Dewey Circle planned giving program.

These relationships, today and into the future, make working for the Foundation so personally and professionally rewarding. Your commitment to this organization reflects how highly you value our Library and our community, and we’re always grateful you’re riding with us!

Stay connected and keep moving forward,

susan patersonNew Library Fellow

We see every day how much the people of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County value and support our Library, and we are thrilled to welcome longtime Charlotte leader Susan Patterson as the Library’s first Community Fellow. In this one-year volunteer residency role, Susan will deepen and coordinate community engagement activities, and bring the voice of the community – along with her own valuable perspective, experience and energy – to projects that will shape the Library’s next big steps.

Our spring print newsletter contained an article about the Dewey Circle, which acknowledges the generosity of friends and donors who include the Library Foundation in their estate plans. Since the distribution of that newsletter, we’ve received several requests for additional information about making a legacy gift.

Anyone can leave a legacy gift of any size, and there are simple ways to do it. We’d welcome the opportunity to work with you to create a structure that suits your passions and fits within your overall estate plans. Contact the Foundation to arrange a personal, confidential conversation to learn more and discuss options.
