They didn't die from the cold without. They died from the cold within. - James Patrick Kinney
I can't stop thinking about James Kinney's poem, "The Cold Within," about six men who each for different reasons refuse to add their logs to a fire, until they all freeze to death. My colleague's ten-year-old daughter recently read and discussed this poem in school, and the futility of the men's stubbornness, bigotry and selfishness was immediately apparent to a diverse classroom of fourth graders. They should have had some kids there, the students agreed, kids would have kept the fire burning.
Your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library keeps the fire burning too. At the core of our mission is a commitment that everyone, regardless of circumstance, should have access to information, resources and opportunity to improve their lives.
In a world that sometimes seems overwhelmingly divided by race, politics and economics, your generosity gives me hope. Your support of a Library that is truly for all, that brings us together around a shared joy of learning, with inclusive programs and welcoming locations, is the greatest endorsement of all that our Library stands for.
Thank you for adding your logs to our shared fire, and for teaching all of our children the importance of building a stronger community, together.
Warmly,
Jenni Gaisbauer, CFRE
Executive Director
