July E-Newsletter
This month we asked David Singleton to share his thoughts:
Libraries Transform.
I'd expand that sentence: Libraries transform individuals and communities, and libraries themselves are transforming.
Libraries Transform is the theme of both a multi-year national awareness campaign and the recent American Library Association annual conference. Attendees heard a conversation between former First Lady Michelle Obama and Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, the first woman and first African American to hold that position. We also enjoyed a preview screening of The Public, Emilio Estevez's new film about a library serving a city's homeless population during a brutal winter.
Transformation is everywhere in libraries. The profession is becoming more diverse, with Spectrum Scholars, dedicated to increasing diversity in the library profession, celebrating 20 years. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Coretta Scott King Awards, recognizing outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults. And libraries in many communities are welcoming social workers and educational specialists to support transformation.
Libraries have long been change agents that support community goals including early literacy, educational success, digital literacy and economic opportunity. Today, our work is more essential - and visible - than ever.
I'm proud to say that our Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is recognized as one of the most innovative and community-centered libraries in the country. Support from the Library Foundation together with funding from Mecklenburg County makes our work - and impact - possible. Thank you for enabling the ongoing transformation of the Library and our community through your generous support.
